A True Morganite: I'm So Glad I Go / Went to Morgan State
|
As soon as I stepped my foot on the grounds of Morgan State University, I knew this was the place for me. It was a hot day om August and there was no breeze insight; but I was too excited to care. Seeing all shades of people, hearing the various accents and that feeling that comes over you when you know you are home; that is how I felt. I initially attended MSU from 1990 ~ 1994 and life was GREAT! the yard was always crowded, and the bridge was always the place to be. Spending days in McKeldin, watching tv, playing spades, watching the cute guy or just catching up on the goings on across the yard McKeldin was where everyone met up at when the weather was cool but when the weather was hot... The Bridge was the hottest place on the yard. In between classes, McKeldin was where everyone was during the day. However, when night fell upon the yard, McKeldin turned into the place to party during my Freshman year.
Another thing that made Morgan great during the 90's were the celebrity sightings. Everyone that was anyone could be found at Morgan. That is why Morgan is mentioned in so many Rap songs, because the artists were always here. You could spot Omar Epps trying to get into Blount Towers, Fat Joe on the bridge, Method Man, GhostFace Killer or other members of the Wu Tang Clan just hanging out. The list of celebrities hanging out at Morgan is endless. My time at Morgan was one that I will never forget because I learned so much about people, life and the education was great too. The professors, some that had been at MSU for years, all seemed to care about their students and wanted the best from and for them. Whether you loved or hated your professor, you knew that you received a wonderful education, and you learned what you came to learn. Morgan State University was also 1 of the few universities that offered every organization that you could think of. Pan Hellenic, Non- Pan Hellenic, Social Clubs, you name it Morgan in the 90's had it. The Divine 9 had supportive " sister & brother" organizations and I was a proud member of the Omega Sweethearts, and I also pledged a Non Pan Hellenic sorority Iota Phi Lambda which is a sorority for business minded women. 1 thing that as popular during Homecoming was for the organizations to lay bricks on a block, on the yard. Me and my Omega Sweetheart line sisters laid the best plot of bricks 1 year & I am still proud of that accomplishment. (pictured) It took us practically all night to complete. You may be wondering how I ended up back at Morgan State University. When I completed my degree initially, I did not participate in the Commencement Ceremony nor did I ever inquire about my paper degree, because I never needed it and never thought about it. My parents were satisfied that I completed college, and I was not thinking about that piece of paper because I had the memories and I was living my BEST LIFE, When I applied to Graduate school they noticed that my transcript was missing something and when they reached out to MSU; and the almost year long process of what do I do now began. Since the school no longer offers Telecommunications as a degree, there was no way to verify my degree. I know it makes no sense but that is the short version. I had to complete 2 classes to get a new degree in a program that is currently offered and here I am about to complete this new degree. I will be participating fully in the Commencement Ceremony this time and I will make it memorable. The great thing about this situation is that now my children will see their mother accept her degree from the best University to ever do it! WE ARE THE BEARS!! |
